What Quiet BringsSurgery on my arthritic left thumb has brought me many blessings. Along with pain relief and the promise of better function, I’ve had the opportunity to study patience, dependence, and trust. Two weeks’ medical leave from my job provided time to reflect, read, pray….a rare gift.
Patience: Last month I posted here about the delay in my surgery. That day, I was deeply disappointed. I had my life all organized around surgery and I did not want to wait. God had another plan–and so I waited. Whether He had a reason beyond my ongoing need for a refresher course in patience, I may never know. But my patience got a great workout during the weeks between the original surgery date and December 30, the actual surgery date.
Dependence and Trust: Nothing helps me learn to be dependent as much as depending on others. While my abilities are increasing–yesterday I tied my own shoes for the first time in several weeks–the cast does limit my activities. And in the first days following surgery, I relied on my husband, Rich, to meet even my simplest needs. When I asked for something, say, a glass of water, he provided it for me. When I was in pain, he comforted me. When I am in a position of dependence, and my needs are met, my trust is reinforced.
Funny how our relationships with other people reflect our relationship with God.
